From the buzz of Miami to the fun of Orlando: Fly to Florida for these sensational cities

In this section:

Florida offers up pretty much all you could want in a destination.

On one hand you've got beautiful beaches and magical sunsets, and on the other you've got vibrant, energetic cities packed with things to see and do.

We've already told you about some of the finest spots to soak up the sun when visiting the Sunshine State, but if you're looking to mix it up and sample some of the area's very best cities here's where we'd suggest checking out.

We fly direct to Orlando, and here are some of the other Floridian cities you can visit when in this part of the world.

Miami

Little Havana Miami Florida

Welcome to Miami. Without question one of America's most popular places to visit for its fun atmosphere and warm weather (it's the city where the heat is on, right?)

If your onward journey takes to you Miami you'll not be short on good times. The nightlife is outstanding, from swanky jazz bars to underground nightclubs, microbreweries and rooftop bars, while the dining scene is famous the world over. It's also a city which is very easy on the eye, where streets are lined with palm trees, art deco architecture comes to the fore, and awesome street art is found it every turn.

Referred to as the 'Capital of Latin America' the distinct Latin flavour is no more evident than in Little Havana - of course named after and influenced by Cuba's largest city. Visit some of the laid back bars, sip a cocktail, and sample the culture this city is so famous for.

A fascinating place, packed with character, where you can combine laid back beach vibes with the buzz of a bustling city.

Tampa

Plenty of rollercoasters but without the rodent. Tampa is a go-to place for thrill-seekers looking to enjoy a wild ride or two. Busch Gardens theme park is one of the most popular tourist attractions in these parts.

However, just like Florida, there's far more to this place than rollercoasters. In fact, it's probably the perfect place for those who enjoy a packed schedule of fun and activity. Meet the animals at Zootampa, take the kids to the interactive Glazers Children's Museum, or embark on the gorgeous Tampa Riverwalk.

A cracking city for families who love an adventure, but also a place where you can kick back and sample a drink or two in a hip bar, do a spot of shopping, and try out some of the best restaurants around.

Jacksonville

Jacksonville Florida

Thought about Jacksonville, or Jax as the locals call it? This city sits in Northeast Florida, right on the Atlantic Coast, and is a special place for those who enjoy the great outdoors.

Along with 22-miles of beaches there's world class fishing, surfing opportunities, and more than 70 private and public golf courses to tee up on if that's your thing.

If that doesn't quite do it for you then fear not as there's so much more to experience. The celebrated culinary scene offers up some of the very best in seafood, while the local brewing scene is among the best around. You can check out seven of the best local breweries in the self-guided Jax Ale Trail.

Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale Florida

Famous as a great place for a party, these days Fort Lauderdale is far more than just a Spring Break favourite.

Yes there's still plenty opportunity to let your hair down and sample the pubs, bars and clubs, however it's nickname 'the Venice of America' suggests there's another side to this place. Take a gondola ride on the canal, spend some time visiting the shops and restaurants, or kick back on the beach. A great place if you're looking to switch off and take it easy for a while.

And if you want to catch a glimpse of the luxury yachts and mansions on Millionaire's Row, hop on board one of the Fort Lauderdale water taxis and see how the other half live.

St Petersburg

This city holds the record for the most consecutive days of sunshine at 768. Does that sound like a place you want to go on holiday, or does that sound like a place you want to go on holiday. Sign us up.

St Petersburg sits between the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay, and is known for its weather. There are few better places to soak it all up than in Fort De Soto Park. This expansive country park covers five islands and 1,136 acres, and is a great place to explore with beaches, a nature trail and an historic fort.

This city is also where you can find the world famous Salvador Dali Museum which celebrates the life and art of the legendary artist, and holds some of his most famous work. The building itself is a thing of beauty having been designed by architect Yann Weymouth, and the Avant-Garden, on the waterfront of Tampa Bay, is a place well worth visiting.

Orlando

Lake Eola Downtown Orlando - Florida

Let's talk Orlando minus the mouse. It's a city with so much to offer even if crowds, rollercoasters and cartoon animals aren't for you.

Downtown Orlando has a vibrant music and performing arts scene, plenty of museums and galleries, and no fewer than 34, yes 34, Michelin Guide restaurants. Holidays are for eating and drinking what you want, and you can certainly do that here.

If you like spending time on the water then take advantage of the Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour - an hour long adventure in which you can see some of the area's best attractions, and remarkable wildlife along the way. You can also head south to the Everglades and explore the area by airboat for an unforgettable experience.

Orlando certainly has an up-tempo side for those who like their theme parks, but there's another world out there to experience away from the hustle and bustle.
