So far as European capital cities go Athens represents something quite unique.
Firstly, there are few places with a history quite like it. There's no disputing its story is one of the main reasons visitors flock there in huge numbers from all corners of the globe. The Acropolis towers above the city as a symbol of ancient Greece, and the Parthenon which dates back to 447 BC is a real icon.
But, while its rich history is rightly lauded, it's also a gorgeous place to look at and its skyline is unlike anything else you'll see on the continent. The scenery is something spectacular.
While difficult to do justice through a camera lens, and you really need to set foot in the place yourself, we've compiled a selection of photographs which help showcase Athens' charm and beauty.
Isn't it just magnificent? While many major cities, and world capitals, boast impressive skyscrapers and modern architecture, Athens has something different to offer. At more than 3,000 years old the city is one of the oldest on the planet, and much of its history has been preserved to this day. An ancient city to treasure.
You'll struggle to find anywhere with better views of the Acropolis and ancient temples than Dionysiou Areopagitou. The paved street is a real favourite among visitors for this very reason. At over 800 metres long it's an ideal spot from which to explore and soak up the city.
What better place to kick back and relax. Lake Vouliagmeni, a natural mineral spa, was formed thousands of years ago following an earthquake. These days the lagoon is surrounded by deck chairs and a bar, and is frequented by those who enjoy swimming, snorkeling or simply relaxing in the water. A real natural beauty.

Widely regarded to be one of the finest day trips out of Athens. The Temple of Poseidon on Cape Sounion dates back more than 2,000 years and is dedicated to the Olympian God of the Sea. Located on the southern coast of Attica, it's also a place from which you can enjoy truly beautiful views of the Aegean Sea. Be sure to visit during sunset to see it at its best.
Talking of sunsets, how about this? You'll struggle to find anywhere that does this stuff better than Greece. Flisvos Marina is a great place to see some luxury yachts while unwinding, enjoying the scenery, and sipping a wine or two in the cafes and bars.
If sunsets really are your thing then a trip to the summit of Lycabettus Hill is a must. At more than 270 metres above sea it is the highest point in central Athens. Travel to the top by cable car and dine in the restaurant while gazing out over this magnificent ancient city.
